Winterfest and flu

Will and Rodney have been fighting the flu since Sunday. Will is finally well enough to go to school tomorrow but Rodney is still down for the count. But before the got sick, the boys and I enjoyed the free Winterfest event on base Saturday afternoon.

Here is a video link to shttp sledding:

Sledding in Pensacola

Also, please keep Rodney's Dad, Paul, in your prayers. While he was recovering from radiation treatments for the brain tumor, he was hospitalized last week with a perforated bowel. He is stable but will remain in the hospital, which is about an hour away from their home, for a few weeks.

Chalk and Fat Tuesday

This weekend was a long weekend for Rodney and I, but the boys still had to go to school on Monday. But we still made the most of the weekend. Friday night the boys and I went and saw Star Wars Episode 1 in the theaters. It was hard for me to believe that the first time I saw it, neither of them were born, I hadn't yet met Rodney and I was watching it to write a story for the Yuma Daily Sun. Time flies. The boys loved seeing it in 3D on the big screen. I think this will have to be a tradition. Rodney is not a fan of SciFi, so he did not partake.

Will and Xan found the sidewalk chalk in the garage and went to work Sunday. I think they got more chalk on themselves than they did on the sidewalk.

Today was Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) and even though we are a few hours away from New Orleans, Pensacola celebrates. The kids got to wear funny hats to school to celebrate. Even after living here for 4 years, I can't quite get in to Mardi Gras. I'm more of a Cinco de Mayo girl, myself. Chips, salsa and margaritas beat a King's Cake any day! And no plastic baby to accidentally swallow!

First school dance

Rodney Took the boys to their first school dance tonight while I was in class. They both had a good time, he said, Xan cutting it up on the dance floor and Will dancing some and hanging out with friends more.

Snow days

The kids are having a great time with Rodney in Illinois, visiting Grandma Peggy and Grandpa Paul. It snowed yesterday, so there have been snowball fights and snowmen.

Choir boy and 15 seconds of fame

I don't have any pictures yet, but Will was excited to announce that he made the school choir. I'm sure we'll have a performance or 10 to attend, so photos and video coming soon...

Also, Xan's Wall of Fame milestone was commemorated at school on the school TV announcements yesterday. He got his 15 seconds of fame and was beyond excited. Unfortunately, no photos or videos of that, either.

Rodeos, Super Bowl and the Wall of Fame

Friday night Professional Bull Riding was in town at the civic center, so we went. Xan loved it, Will not so much, but we were there with a group of Marines, so the evening was entertaining regardless of your opinion of bull riding.

On Saturday the boys tried out for baseball so they could be assigned to teams. Xan will be playing for the same coach as last season, and the team will probably be the Reds again - a fact he is very happy about. Will has been assigned to the White Sox, the team his teams of the past have always tried to beat. Heis just fine with that, however.
Sunday, was of course, the Super Bowl, We headed over to a colleague of Rodney's for a party. Some of the group was playing beer pong prior to the game, but leave it to Xan to play Dr Pepper pong in preparation for his college years. Apparently he was winning when I got this photo.

Pong playing aside, Xan read enough books to get on the Wall of Fame today. That's 30 easy reader books, for a total of 15 Accelerated Reader points. He is very excited because his name will be announced on the morning announcements at school tomorrow.

Will is also doing well in school, working on fractions now. It's a complete coincidence, but he is doing lessons on the Khan Academy online. I just introduced this to my colleagues at the credit union to consider as we continue financial education seminars through 2012. Here is a cool 20-minute video about the founder of the Academy and why he started the free online resource for students of all ages: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gM95HHI4gLk

Be sure to check out both kids' class web sites so you can keep track of the achievements and activities.
