A lovely long weekend...

The Guthrie's made the most of the long weekend - sleeping and resting being paramount. But, we did manage to do lots of fun stuff.

Friday night we had dinner at our favorite restaurant, Cactus Flower, at Will's request. Pen Air paid for it since I had reached a particular goal at work. There may not be such a thing as free lunch, but there is free dinner!

Will also brought home his first fundraiser for the year. You and others in your household may have gotten an email regarding this - he got an extra gift if he emailed 10 people. If you would like to order, just go to www.charlestonwrap.com and use student ID #204267 when you shop. Just so you know, he has his eye on an iPod Touch and he only needs to sell 300 items to get that. Your help is appreciated. :)

Will has also been working hard on his spelling this weekend. He hasn't been doing so well on it, but the words did get a little tougher this year: restaurant, tongue, especially, permission, graduate. Rodney was thrilled that he managed to take the spelling test and get them all right. We knew it was a risky thing to do in front of the kids!

However, he did get a beginning-of-the-year reading test to see where he was at and I am pleased to say he reads at the same level as a fourth grader, six months in to the school year (4.6). He ranks in the 84th percentile nationally and is encouraged to read books in the 3.2-5.1 grade levels.

On Saturday we checked out the T&W Fleamarket here in Pensacola. A lot of people had raved about it, ad it is only open on Saturdays. It was OK, a little hot and there wasn't much of the things I like to shop for, but Will and Xan were each allowed to spend $5 to get toys. Will also found Pokemon sheets, ad since you never know when you will find those, and he was uber-excited, we bought them. $10 seemed reasonable to me.

Later that afternoon we had a barbecue at our house and invited Rodney's cousin Rachelle and her family over, and his fellow Marine friends Mark and Joy and their family. The kids all played very well, at Rodney's hamburgers, steak and wings were a hit. Also a big hit was my manicurist's deer egg rolls. Rodney had given her some of his deer meat since I don't particularly care for it, and she gave him some egg rolls to fry in return. Everyone thought they were wonderful. They were gone before I had a chance to try them.

Kayden, Emma, Will and Abby play ball while Xan rolls around in the background.

We spent a lot of the weekend watching movies. There seemed to be a theme: space. We watched Avatar (Ripley took advantage of the kids lounging on the floor) and Planet 51 at home.

This afternoon we used up the last of my Pen Air awards and went to the movies. The kids wanted to see Despicable Me, which was only available in 3D due when we wanted to see it (Internet glitch) and was pretty funny. We got a laugh right away when we saw the kids in their 3D glasses. I think Xan looks a little bit like George Burns.

Oh, and by the way, Uncle Fester now lives here.
